No matter what your goals are, build muscle, burn fat, get stronger, the answer is full body training. Full body training three days a week is all you need. Anything more than that, you are causing excess cortisol and stress to your system. This causes an increase in stored body fat and a decrease in testosterone. In addition, muscle protein synthesis, or the muscle building signal, is elevated for 48-72 hours after training. This means that frequency of training is superior to all else when trying to build muscle. The body part split came into popularity due to the use of performance enhancing drugs ie steroids. With steroids, the individual is always in a state of building muscle or anabolic, so there is no need to train in a way that will help you stay that way. For us natural lifters, that don't want to subject ourselves to the harmful side effects that these drugs bring, you have to be training with full body workouts.
